Question - Treatment - fertility :

My wife and I are planning to have our first baby, but I was tested to have a less than normal sperm counts, I'd like to know what things to take to improve my sperm counts?

Answer:

Thank you for your question! The answer is rather complicated, unfortunately. A low sperm count can result from a number of different things. We assume that you have seen a doctor, since you know that your sperm count is low. This question could be put to that doctor or clinic, since they might be able to deal with the specific reasons for your low

sperm count. There is an excellent fertility clinic in Hong Kong associated with the medical school, however, and they might be able to help as well. In general, however, if the low sperm count is from an unknown cause, the hormones Human Menopausal Gonadotropin (hMG) or Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) can influence the number of sperm cells. These hormone preparations are expensive, though the second hormone (hCG) is less costly than hMG.

Treatment is started with hCG and hMG is added at a later stage in the treatment when its effects are needed most. A course of therapy may last as long as 12 months.

There are some things you can do with diet which may help as well. Eating a diet with lots of fruits and vegetables can be important, and avoiding fried food or oils may also help. In addition, recent medical research indicates that men with decreased movement of the sperm cells and with certain malformations of the sperm cells can be helped by taking vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc. The amounts to take vary from person to person, but should be in the range of 1000 mg of vitamin C, 400 IU of vitamin E and no more than 100mg of zinc per day. Since a lack of antioxidants can affect the sperm cells

It might be a good idea to take a very good multivitamin with large amounts of antioxidants. Physicians in the USA are recommending that their patients with low sperm counts take an excellent multivitamin which contains large amounts of antioxidants, and are having some success. Please see our sister webpage www.nutritionno1.com in the English section for detailed information on vitamins and antioxidants. We know of some excellent vitamins of this type available in Hong Kong and can refer you to a source if you would like us to do so.
